This series shares the key lessons learned in the eradication of smallpox and inspires people to consider how they are applicable today, especially as it relates to COVID-19, and other existential threats to humanity.

Our logo represents key elements of the successful Smallpox Eradication Programme. The circle in the center symbolizes the strategy used to eradicate smallpox--surveillance and containment. It also stands for Zero, or eradication, which was also the goal. Around the circle is a depiction of 9 bifurcated needles, the primary instrument used to deliver vaccine during the World Health Organization's 1966–1977 campaign to eradicate smallpox. Each bifurcated needle represents one of the lessons learned from smallpox eradication—and a means to create lasting global change.
